Recognize Ua-Perm from several angles

Front view

All corner pairs are solved. Find the solved edge bar and determine whether the other three edges must cycle clockwise to reach their centers.

Right · 90°

Right view

Use color order around the side centers to determine cycle direction. This prevents guessing Ua versus Ub from a memorized arrow.

Back · 180°

Back view

When the solved bar is at the back, the primary algorithm can often begin immediately. Confirm the three front edges cycle in the Ua direction.

Left · -90°

Left view

Read the opposite side colors and check that corners remain solved. A corner mismatch means the case is not a U perm.

Apply the inverse setup and randomize U. Practice calling Ua or Ub aloud before execution so direction recognition is measured separately from the algorithm.

Finger tricks

Execute as one controlled phrase

  1. For the RU algorithm, begin with R U' using the left index for U prime when comfortable.
  2. Keep the right hand flowing through the repeated R U rhythm instead of resetting after each R.
  3. Use controlled U' flicks in the second half and align the layers before the final R2.
  4. For the M alternative, practice M and M prime separately before attempting the full sequence at speed.

Common mistakes

What usually breaks the case

  • Confusing Ua with Ub because cycle direction was memorized from only one front.
  • Using a whole-hand grip change for every repeated R turn in the RU algorithm.
  • Pulling M2 unevenly and leaving the slice misaligned before U.
  • Ignoring final AUF because the edge cycle feels visually complete.
